In a new advertisement released days before the general election, Vice President Joe Biden has proclaimed his and President Barack Obama’s adherence to Catholic values.
“As a practicing Catholic like many of you, I was raised in a household where there was absolutely no distinction between the values my mom and dad drilled into us and what I learned from the nuns and priests who educated me,” said Biden in the ad, posted online on Oct. 29.
“We call it Catholic Social Doctrine: whatever you do to the least of these, you do for me,” he said.
“I’m here to tell you that President Obama shares those values,” he continued, defending Obama’s tax, health care, immigration and education policies as providing people with “a dignified opportunity to care for themselves and for their families.”
No party can claim Catholic identity, and both campaigns are wrong to do so. I’ve called out Romney/Ryan for this already. Now the Obama/Biden campaign, who are least worthy to do so, is taking hold of this lie and running with it. Get this, Joe Biden. The Church practices social justice in all she does. If the American government were to melt away, the Church would stand. It has ever been so. We don’t need civil government in order to exist, and even flourish, in the world as an institution that provides for all who are in need. The Catholic Church exists throughout the world providing for those in need. It is the largest charitable institution on earth and the oldest institution on earth. No matter which country we are in, we are still the Catholic Church and social justice is done through our ministries. The only place where this is limited is in countries that practice tyranny against us, limiting us in our ability to provide for the needy. So it is with the Obama Administration in their demand that we materially cooperate in evil via abortion, contraception and “gay marriage.” Thanks to Barack Obama, Catholic institutions across America have this choice: to sin or to shut the doors of Catholic ministries. It seems clear that the intent here is to force the Church to shut these doors so that government may have a more prominent role in people’s lives instead of charity. Even apart from the fact that this administration is the most pro-abortion in history, and that no Catholic may, in good conscience, vote for a pro-abortion candidate, we have a danger now of the Church herself being pushed back in society. For Joe Biden to claim that he and Barack Obama have Catholic values is like a cat claiming he wants to be friends with the mouse.
Vote Romney. I don’t like Mitt Romney, but he promises more freedom for the Church in America and we have to take that opportunity. This administration is killing us.
