Rick Santorum Supports Safety Net, Warns Against Permanent Dependency

Rick Santorum is ‘right on’ in his latest column at World Net Daily: Poverty need not be permanent.

Programs designed to do good in the short term wind up doing great harm in the long term. And long-term poverty and the social pathologies that it creates – crime, alcohol and drug abuse, illiteracy, illegitimacy – are the results.

The Republican Party has said for years that the Democratic Party seems far more committed to expanding government dependency than it is to expanding opportunity. As Rick Santorum points out, things are tough right now, and a safety net is always going to be important, but permanent dependency is becoming more the norm than it once was. If America is to bounce back, it has to be through job opportunities, not through ever-expanding and permanent dependency on government where the poor are permanently poor.
