I was just reading this Twitter conversation in amazement wherein conservatives are comparing Barack Obama’s re-election to O.J. Simpson being found not guilty of murdering his wife and Ronald Goldman. There is something that #TCOT (Top Conservatives on Twitter) does not seem to get. This is that it is not completely devoid of reason to vote for a president just because he is black. In no way can it be compared to a murder trial where the defendant is black. To compare these two things seems racist to me, primarily because an election is not a murder trial, and also because it assumes that all black people think the same way. Believe me, there are plenty of people who supported the McCain/Palin ticket only because Sarah Palin is a woman, and no one in #TCOT complained about that. Truth be told, some in #TCOT still love to say that because Sarah Palin is a woman, she would make a better president.
You can’t have it both ways, folks.
Identity politics is an old game of the Left, used for driving wedges between groups of people who resent each other. To see “conservatives” playing identity politics is sad. To see it reach the level of racism is way over the top.
If you want to take back the White House, stop playing games. Try to understand that it is reasonable to want “the black guy” to win, and it is reasonable to want “the woman” to win, but in the end, it is all of us who need to win. The only way to do that is to hold onto the founding principles of our country. Even though the Founders themselves didn’t quite live up to them (they didn’t end slavery), the principles themselves as spelled out are sound. Stick to them, and stop it with the wedge-driving. America is divided enough.
Here’s a regular “Joe Six-Pack” guy explaining why America has been the greatest country in the world. Reject this, and you throw America away. This guy can’t even spell “divine,” nor pronounce “Aquinas” or “origins” properly…but he knows what was almost universally known among conservatives about 25 years ago.
